LeBron James finally ended weeks of speculation about his future by signing a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers on July 24, bringing one of the biggest free agency sagas in NBA history to a close.
The story dominated the sports news agenda, while also becoming one of the most actively traded sport prediction markets ever, with more than $270 million matched across Kalshi and Polymarket markets covering his next team, signing date and contract.
It was confirmed on June 30 he would be ending an eight-year stay at the Los Angeles Lakers, with Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat all at one time leading the market, and Philadelphia an outsider until minutes before ESPN journalist Shams Charania broke the news – and nearly the internet - with the blockbuster report of LeBron's switch to the City of Brotherly Love.

Traders quickly re-examined Philadelphia's hopes of ending a 43-year wait for a Championship, their chances of winning the Eastern Conference, and LeBron's own hopes of becoming the first player to win the NBA Finals with four different teams - immediately assigning a numerical on-court value to one of the greatest players in NBA history.

76ers to win Eastern Conference
LeBron's arrival immediately added around eight percentage points to Philadelphia's implied probability in the Eastern Conference prediction market, lifting them ahead of defending champions New York.

76ers regular season wins
One of the biggest shifts in expectations has been for Philadelphia's regular-season record.
Before the signing was announced, Kalshi's projected regular-season wins for the 76ers stood at 48.8 victories. Within hours of LeBron joining the franchise, that forecast had jumped to 52.2 wins before settling back to between 51 and 52 victories as the market absorbed the news.
Traders are also more confident Philadelphia will clear the 50-win mark. The probability of the 76ers winning 50 or more regular-season games increased from 47% before the announcement to 57% afterwards—a jump of 10 percentage points.
WHO WERE THE BIGGEST WINNERS AND LOSERS?
There's clearly one big winner, with Philly jumping from fifth to third favourites, as they look to end their long wait for NBA glory.
After starting out with an implied Championship probability of around 5%, LeBron's arrival more than doubled their chances up to 12% - and inserted them as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.
Rival contenders New York (19%) and Boston (16%) remained static in the market, but were leapfrogged by the upgraded Philly.
Their implied probability of reaching the NBA Finals from the East increased from 16% to 24%, moving them ahead of defending conference champions New York, along with a spike in projected regular-season win total from 48.8 victories to 52.2.
Miami were the biggest losers. They were the overwhelming favourites to sign LeBron at around 45% immediately before news emerged he was heading to the 76ers, and their chances in the Eastern Conference market tumbled quickly after from 19% down to 8%.
Cleveland also took a hit. They spent much of July as favourites to get James, but dropped from 10% down to 6% for the Conference title after failing to tempt their home-state star back for a last dance in Ohio.
Despite the shift in the East, there was little change right at the very top of the market with Oklahoma City Thunder (21%) and San Antonio Spurs (20%) remaining at the head of the NBA Championship field, so while LeBron's arrival at Philadelphia has boosted them to top contenders for the Eastern Conference - the market still expects next season's winners to come from out West.
